If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Companion provides practical information to enhance your reading experience. For each book, you can see the estimated reading time, the number of text sections, and the average sentence length. This helps you plan your reading and understand the book's structure.

These estimates are based on standard reading speeds and word counts. They are approximate and meant to give you a general idea. Use the companion to choose a book that matches your available time and to follow along as you read.

Reading Time Estimates

Each book includes an estimated reading time in minutes. For example, 'The eater of souls' takes about 20 minutes, while 'Short Stories of Various Types' takes about 377 minutes.

Text Sections

Books are divided into sections, making it easier to pause and resume. The number of sections varies from 1 to 18.

Sentence Complexity

Average sentence length is provided. A higher average suggests longer, more complex sentences, which may require more attention.

Reading Tracker Guide

Making Steady Progress with Pages

The Reading Tracker is a simple tool for planning your progress through a book. It records your current page, the total number of pages, and a daily page goal. From those numbers, it estimates how many days you need to finish. It does not track minutes or sections; it is built around pages, which is the unit most readers see in their edition.

Because the catalog does not always provide a fixed page count, the tracker uses an estimate: it divides the word count by 250 words per page. For example, "The land beyond the mist — Background and Themes" (id 304) has 10,924 words, so its initial page estimate is ceil(10924 / 250) = 44 pages. If your edition shows a different number, you can replace the estimate with the actual page count from your reading app or print copy.

Setting a Daily Page Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages, which is a reasonable starting point for many readers. For a 44-page book like "The land beyond the mist," that would mean finishing in about 3 days (ceil(44 / 20) = 3). If you have more time, you could increase the goal to 30 pages and finish in 2 days. The goal is entirely yours to adjust; the tracker simply uses it to calculate estimated finish days.

You might prefer to set a goal based on your available time rather than a fixed number. If you know you can read for 30 minutes a day, and you estimate that you read about a page per minute, you might set a goal of 30 pages. The tracker's calculations are straightforward: estimated finish days equals the remaining pages divided by the daily goal, rounded up.

Updating Your Progress

As you read, you update the current page in the tracker. The estimated remaining time is proportional to the remaining pages. If you are halfway through a book, your remaining time is half of the estimated total. For "The land beyond the mist," which has an estimated reading time of 48 minutes, being halfway means about 24 minutes left.

The tracker stores your history in your browser's localStorage, so it persists between visits without an account. If you clear your browser data, the history will be lost. This is a lightweight approach that respects your privacy, but it also means your progress is tied to one device.

Using the Tracker with a Real Book

Let's say you choose "The land beyond the mist" as your next read. The tracker initially shows 44 pages total. You set a daily goal of 20 pages. After reading 20 pages on the first day, you update the current page to 20. The tracker now shows 24 pages remaining, an estimated finish time of about 26 minutes (48 × 24 / 44), and a finish day of 2 (ceil(24 / 20) = 2).

If your edition has a different page count, you can change the total to match. Suppose your copy has 50 pages. The tracker recalculates the remaining time based on the new total, using the same proportion. This flexibility ensures the tracker works with any edition you own.
